Sorrow’s yearning

By Trish Edwards

I watch old friends grieve,
The death of a spouse,
I knew only by name.

We shared another life,
Then went our different ways,
Now one of theirs is gone.

Though removed from their todays,
I feel the sharp edges of their heartbreak,
Care about their pain.

But easing anguish now,
Would erase the memories too,
Souvenirs of one so clearly loved.

Keepsakes to help,
Find solace and serenity,
Of remembered intimacies,
Recollected conversations, kindnesses,
Inimitable bonds, never-to-be-forgotten friends.
